History of Breed

Fist mention concern breeding of Bavarian Mountain Scenthounds in Bavaria we find in a document from 18 of june 1459. According to the document Kaspar Torring gave the Tegernsee Monastery a scenthound, which made a hudge impact at monastery dog breeding. In literature from 17 and 18 century there is no mention about Bavarian Mountain Scenthound. In 1812 prince Thurn and Taxis were breeding dogs which were used only to work on a farm. Probably their breeding was based on old bavarian mountain dogs, hanover scenthounds and small hounds (probably dachshunds).
In the middle of 19 century not only the royal court but also landlords from upper Bavaria were buying scenthounds from prince Thurn and Taxis breeding. Sometimes the dogs were sold to profesional hunters and forest rangers.

Nowadays it is hard to say for sure which dogs and breeds contribute to origin of Bavarian Mountain Scenthound. K. Brandt wrote "....as to the origin of dogs, that were kept by landlords in bavarian mountains, Salzkammergut, Tyrol, Styria the number of theories is countless..". One of the possibilities is the cross of the hanover scenthound and dachshund becouse many of bavarian scenthounds had knock-kneed front paws and typical for dachshund.

During show in 1883 few Bavarian Mountain Scenthounds were presented. After the show O. Grashey sent the questionnaire to all profesional hunters and landlords to get as many information about this interesting breed. Based on this information a standrd had been worked out and the official name was Bavarian Mountain Scenthound.

Unfortunately landlords from Bavaria, they didn't see much sense in breeding dogs of pure-breed.
11 May 1912 in Monachium first Bavarian Mountain Scentound Club (Klub Posokowca Bawarskiego) was found. In 1930 Gustav Volkmar founder and chairman of Bavarian Mountain Scenthound Club found in Lipsk International Bavarian Mountain Scenthound Union (Międzynarodowy Związek Posokowców). The aim of the Union was to support the breed of scenthounds.
